When most people think about taking care of their skin, the scalp if often forgotten. But the scalp is just as important and it’s the key to healthy, shiny hair, something we all want to achieve. The scalp consists of layers of tissue, as does the rest of your skin, with lower layers of tissue being new and healthy, and the upper layers mostly consisting of dead skin tissue which is ready to be removed. To keep your scalp healthy, it’s important to wash it regularly to remove any excess oil produced by your sebaceous glands as well as any nasty bacteria that may form.

How To Take Care Of Your Scalp

There are several things you can do to take care of your scalp to keep it clean and healthy:

Tip #1 – Limit the use of chemicals

While chemicals can create some interesting looks such as colouring your hair, they can cause significant damage to your hair and scalp such as drying it out and causing irritation. The best thing to do is reduce your usage of chemicals as much as possible, but if you insist on using them, be sure to read all instructions and warnings properly. It may be advisable to see a stylist to ensure any treatments are done correctly.

Tip #2 – Use the right shampoo

A good shampoo should clean and nourish both your hair and scalp to create a healthy look without causing any damage. Try to avoid using these types of devices if possible, or at least how often you use them, and your body will no doubt thank you for it.

Tip #4 – Watch out for the Sun

As with your skin, your scalp is susceptible to cancer caused by the Sun’s rays. You may think the hair on your head protects it, but it does very little in this regard. Try to avoid prolonged exposure in the Sun to avoid this, or wear a hat or cap for protection.

Tip #5 – Use the right brush

While using a brush every day can make your hair look better and remove those nasty knots, it can have quite a significant impact on your scalp. The skin on your scalp is delicate and aggressively rubbing and cratching it with a brush can do some serious harm. It’s advisable to avoid hard brushes with metal prongs or bristles. Instead, go for a softer choice and plastic prongs or a natural bristle brush and try to be gentle when brushing your hair or cut down on doing it so much.
